Thanks for this great interview with a man who, in my estimation, is a giant in the Kingdom of God, even though he calls himself a little guy.
As the pastor of a truly little church, I applaud Bro Wiley's heart and passion. I will be in prayer that his dreams of the convention being for the little guy will come true.
God bless you, Micah and John, for this awesome blog. I'll be stopping by your personal blogs from time to time.
After getting to spend some time this week with Wiley, both in the interview, and in a couple of other moments, I have learned to appreciate him as a man to be emulated in many ways. Until this week, he was never known by many to be anything more than a convention gadfly. It's my hope that people can soon learn that he's much, much more and that his passion for Jesus and his passion for people know no bounds.
I hope your optimism is justified. I listened to his remark about being at Southwestern 30 years ago and being criticized for believing that the Adam and Eve were real people and in inerrancy and being made to feel like an outcast. I wish you had asked him for details about that and asked him to name names. I was at Southwestern 35 years ago and off and on for the next 15 years. I believed Adam and Eve were real people and in the inerrancy of scripture. I was never criticized and was in fact encouraged in that belief. I wonder who he was hanging out with. The president of the seminary at the time believed that Adam and Eve were real people and in inerrancy of scripture. every professor I knew did also. This is the kind of inaccurate, scare story that has been made for years without challenge. He complained about being left of the appointments and said Adrian Rogers encouraged him to hang in there. Adrian Rogers was president of our convention for 3 years. Why do you think Adrian or any of the people appointed by Adrian never appointed Wiley to a trustee board?
I don't know what you are trying to imply, but I suspect its negative. Brother Wiley may not fit the profile of some of our "elite" SB preachers, but he is a welcome breath of fresh air. We need more men like him in our midst.
Thanks SBC Video's for the interview of Wiley Drake.
Drake does not fit my profile of the little church pastor. Wiley Drake, Th.D., D.Min., Senior Pastor of his church in California has a weekly radio show and on his website offers to travel to important events and broadcast from there. He travels all over the U.S. attending political functions and has been associated with Rev. Sun Myung Moon while appearing at and helping sponsor meetings featuring Moon. Although he sponsored the Disney boycott when asked about the family passes he owned he said he would keep them since they cost so much. He offered to cleanse the White House with prayer after President Reagan left because Reagan was an honorary mason and Nancy practiced astrology there. He may not be an elitist by he is not representitive of the small church pastors in the SBC I know.
what on earth have we done? I find it unbelievable that we rallied (rightly so) around Page because of his strong support of the CP and we give a pass to Drake.
Did you listen to this interview "shame on you" if your church is ever locked and not open 24/7. What?
The fact that over 3,000 people have made decissions for Christ in his church in the last 10 years and his weekend worship gatherings only draws 100 ought to cause concern. Did Jesus call us to simply make converts? Of course not, He called us to make disciples and by his own admission we can gather that his church is failing at discipling the vast majority of those converts.
This is no slam on churches that run 100, I'm a church planter (NAMB) and we have yet to see 100 in one worship gathering. But let's be honest here, most churches that run 100 on Sundays are not seeing 30 conversions a month, every month, for year after year. Churches that see those types of conversions usually grow because they disciple new converts.
I say "shame on" him for his lack of either desire or ability to lead his church in discipling those converts and "shame on" the SBC messengers for voting this guy into any position at all.
Ron West is 100% right, Wiley Drake does not represent the smaller church pastor in the least bit. It's not like Drake is pastoring in a small community in Nebraska or something...
Would someone ask Wiley what it takes to get on his imprecatory prayer list? I would really like to see how much power he has with calling down all that wrath and stuff!
